About Mills River Creamery
The Johnston family is a third generation dairy family in the Mills River area. Our Grandfather started selling fresh milk to the public in 1917. Our father was born in 1920 and raised our family in the Avery’s Creek community. As he became a young man he realized that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. When our grandfather decided to retire, our father took over. He and our mother raised five children- one girl and four boys. Our sister grew up to become a teacher and high school principal. She has since retired but stays very active in the Henderson County educational system. The oldest brother graduated from WCU and took over our father’s retail business which is Fletcher Lawn and Garden located in Fletcher. The other three sons, including myself, have decided to continue the family dairy.
We relocated to Mills River in 1975 and have continued to operate the family farm since. All of the milk that we process comes from our cows that have been raised on the farm. We grow all of our hay and corn locally. We do have to buy other feed products such as protein, vitamins, and minerals to fill the animal’s needs. These are all non-GMO.
We do not give our animals any growth hormones and only use an antibiotic if our veterinarian prescribes that it be done for an individual animal. In the spring of 2014 we decided to start a small processing facility in Mills River.
In August of 2014 we bottled our first cream line milk and began to offer it to the community. It was so well received that we now have it in several retail stores and restaurants in the Asheville area. Since August 2014 we also have added chocolate milk, butter, milk, heavy cream, half and half, and fresh buttermilk to our dairy products.
We hope you enjoy our family tradition as much as we have over the last 98 years and if you’re ever in our neighborhood stop by and see us at The Creamery!
